The first time I watched the movie “The Chronicles of Narnia,” I saw a different kind of mysterious creature presented in the film that looked very inhuman to sight. Overall, the most beautiful-looking was the White Witch. She is tall with skin as pale as snow, and compared to the others creature; she is closet to humans. Although the White Witch appears human, in the end, it turns out that the most beautiful is the evil one who put Narnia’s snowy weather. She is a witch who claims to be human and wants others to believe that she is human and the Queen of Narnia. Contrary to “The Chronicles of Narnia” is the tale of “Beauty and the Beast.” There was a prince who turned into a beast and was frightened by others because of his appearance. Even though he is a prince and a human within him, his appearance as a Beast in human eyes makes him inhuman. However, the unattractive beast is changed into a handsome prince at the end of the story. It is like a demon was transformed into an angle.
I am amazed by these two stories not because of how much children love them but how this story can touch our imagination. Where a beautiful queen can turn into an evil queen and a beast can turn into a handsome prince. This is why fairytales are so fascinating where evil can be disguised and often good does too. It is so related to our Christian belief that even Satan can disguise himself as an angel of light. Likewise, even the Son of God was unrecognized before human eyes on the road to Emmaus. This is how the world we live in can be so deceptive that your eyes can fool you and manipulate your mind.
For this reason, I love fairytales where they bring in our human experiences, so real that it makes sense to our human life. You can trust whatever you think is true, but you might be deceived if you do not examine it well. On the other hand, if you take long enough to observe, you can conquer the outside appearance and find the true hidden beauty. So be aware that in a world where the look can blind you from what is true and good.
