Spending Life Without Living It

Updated: Jan 14, 2023

Let me tell you a story about two close friends whose names were Depress and Content. They both work in the same place, which is not appreciated and regarded by society. One day, Depress told his good friend Content how much he wanted a more stable and secure job than their current one. Content doesn’t have much to say, so he didn’t respond. After a few moments, since his friend didn’t respond, Depress continued saying I would be searching for a better job.

As time passed by, his wish to get a new and more stable job came true. Depress was so happy that he told his good friend Content about the news. Content was over the joy of the information that his good friend got what he wished for. That day, Content saw how happy Depress could be, knowing that it made him more joyful. Like it or not, they need to go their separate ways. It was hard to say goodbye after being for so long together; however, it was for good.

Days turn into weeks, and weeks turn into years. It has been years since they don’t meet each other after Depress got a new job. Even though they keep in touch through calls, texts, and social media. Suddenly Depress surprises his good old friend that he will be back home town for a winter vacation. Hearing that news Content was like a kid opening his Christmas gift wrapper filled with the joy of surprises.

Like the wind, winter arrives in no time. Once Depress was in town, they decided to meet in their favorite tea shop, Authentic Chai, where they usually drink and have a deep conversation. As planned, both were in their favorite tea shop. The first time they see each other, they don’t know how to react as it has been almost a decade since they haven’t seen each other. After a few seconds, the two sit together where they used to sit and drink.

While they were drinking tea, Content asked his friend, “How does it feel like to get a new job that everyone appreciated since I hadn’t been there, I want to know from your experience.” Reluctantly, Depress responded, “You know, the first one to two weeks, all your family, relatives, and neighbor was happy for you, making you feel great. Secondly, when you join the job, it is fantastic to be in a new place, with a new community that highly regards people like me.” Suddenly he asks Content what about you? Instead of responding, he requests afterward what happened. With a deep tone, Depress says, “Yet along with time, all the recognition and appreciation fade away, and you become just an employee again.” As he finished saying that, Content raised his hand and requested another tea.

When the waiter arrived with a cup of tea, Depress said, “I wonder, how can you be on the job for so long?” Content answered, “I love what I do for a living.” Depress replied, “Yes, I know what you mean but have you ever thought about security and stability?” “Of course, my friend,” says Content and shows him a dry cell battery to Depress, “this changed my concept of life.” For Depress, it doesn’t make any sense, and he requested that he could explain it to him.

So, Content begins his explanation by saying that this is an un-rechargeable battery which means you can use all of the power inside but cannot reuse it again. The same way is our life; the emphasis is the time you had in your life here on earth. You cannot take back time or stop time but only use it; eventually, the time has an ending. See my friend, instead of living a life we only spend our energy. Especially in the social media era, we live for groups, comments, likes, and acceptance and only sometimes live for ourselves. Our concern is only how can I fit that group's categories, who say what? Who likes what, and why not me? And how can I be accepted? Until and unless you don’t come out of the box, my friend, you only live for them, not yourself. This is what I call spending life without living it. I believe God wants us to live a life and not spend it.
